Sleeping Bags

There may be a lot of sleeping bags out there, but you will zero in what what is best for you and your needs. For example, backpacking bags focus on minimizing weight.  And, then there are sleeping bags for car and family camping which are all about comfort. That’s as it should be. Here are some features to look for when shopping for a sleeping bag.

Sleeping Bag Temperature Rating:  Choose a sleeping bag with a temperature rating that is just a bit lower than the lowest temperature you expect to experience. So, if you anticipate close to freezing temperatures, go ahead and choose a 20°F bag instead of a 35°F bag. However, if you think that the temperature will remain higher than you expect, you can quite readily vent the bag to provide more air circulation.

Shape of the Sleeping Bag:  Sleeping bags keep you warm by trapping and holding a layer of “dead” or non-circulating air next to your body. Your body heat warms this dead air, and the bag forms a barrier between it and the colder ground or outside air. There are different types to choose from:

  • Rectangular:  The highest number of  camping bags are designed with a rectangular shape for maximum comfort and roominess. If you choose 2 bags with compatible zippers, it’s easy to mate them and create a double bed.
  • Semi-rectangular or barrel shape:  These are used for both camping and backpacking.
  • Mummy bag:  These are great for backpacking as well as car camping.

  • Synthetic:  A lot of campers wind up choosing synthetic insulation because of its strong overall performance and friendly price tag. Usually made of polyester.  Great advantages are that it’s quick drying and insulates even if should it get wet.
  • Goose-down:  This certainly is in some camping bags.  It is ideal because it provides a more durable and compressible alternative to synthetic fill.  However, it will have a slightly higher price tag.
  • Water-resistant Down:  Some sleeping bags feature down that has been treated to protect the feathers from moisture.
